If you were baking a cake, you might need a recipe. Consider the Essentials of Design as the recipe. A recipe has two parts, a.) The Ingredients and b.) The Instructions. Think of the Elements of Design as the ingredients and the Principles of Design as the instructions. See?
This quick guide, along with my other articles, will give you a new way of looking at your home. If done correctly, staging uses the two Essentials of Design to enhance an area.

The basic Elements of Design and composition are: LINE, FORM, SPACE, LIGHT, COLOR and PATTERN & TEXTURE. What does this mean? I'll break it down for you. Today, we'll examine the first element, which is line. Next time we'll look at form, the second element and so on. |

- Line is an excellent tool for establishing mood, rhythm or a sense of height - pretty basic right? It can affect our perception of the size of a room or even an object. Line leads the eye and has four categories as follows: Horizontal, Vertical, Diagonal and Curved.
- Horizontal lines feel stable giving the feeling of relaxation. Examples are: shelving, sofa backs and console tables.
- Vertical lines give the feeling of strength and a sense of height like the columns in classical architecture. One feels this with tall bookcases, floor lamps and full-length drapes.
- Diagonal lines are dynamic and they strongly suggest movement such as stairs and open staircases.
- Curved lines are graceful, elegant and restful. They take an indirect path to their destinations. For you history buffs, they are characteristic of certain furniture eras such as Queen Anne and Georgian. Examples are: doorway arches, curved backs and rolled arms of sofas and chairs. Also, details in furniture such as scroll tops and cabriole legs
